SUNDAY APRIL 7, 2013  FEAST OF DIVINE MERCY

Pope John Paul II as a further sign of his attachment to the Divine Mercy devotion, has authorized the recognition of a plenary indulgence (indulgence that remits the full temporal punishment incurred by a sinner) to Catholics who participate fully in the devotion on the Sunday after Easter.
"To ensure that the faithful live this celebration with intense piety, the supreme pontiff has ordered that the Sunday be enriched with the plenary indulgence."  Vatican announcement on August 3,2002.

A New Beginning: Easter Season

A BLESSED EASTER!

__________________________________

IT'S THE BEGINNING OF EASTER SEASON which lasts seven weeks, ending on the beginning of Pentecost Sunday.  It's the church longest season - 50 days.  Christians believed that the Resurrection was just too big and too important to be celebrated for only one day, or even one week.  When Pentecost became a Christian feast celebrating the descent of the Spirit, Christians turned the time between Passover and Pentecost into the "Easter season."  Although the date of Easter varies, it can be no earlier than March 22, and no later than April 25.

Easter is a time of hope and reality.  In the Bible, even those who suffer are able to hope because their hope is based upon what God can do, not what they can do.  There was the reality of Good Friday because we accept the fact of suffering and failure.

I had my first and last egg hunt many years ago.  Today, Easter Monday, they had an "Egg Roll" at the White House.  President Rutherford B. Hayes officially approved the egg rolling game at the White House lawn in 1878.  The few and real pretty painted eggs that my friends gave me I did not eat but kept them in the freezer.  They've been there for almost 20 years!

For sure, Easter is not a time for penitential practices.  Fasting and kneeling were not permitted.  It's a time to see and taste the goodness of the Lord.

JOY!

Holy Saturday

April 19, 2014 Saturday

BLESSING OF EASTER BASKETS AT ST. JOAN OF ARC PARISH, EVANSTON/SKOKIE, IL.

I eat 3 eggs a day - fried, scrambled and omelet with onions and tomatoes.  God embedded egg helix in my genetic make-up.  Thank God!  I don't put all my eggs in one basket but with one exception - I put all my eggs in one basket at Easter for the blessing.  I urge every Easter celebrants to participate if they have never done it.  It does not take long, just about 15 minutes or so.

AFTER JESUS DIED...
WHAT HAPPENED?

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.  He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in "prison" who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built.  In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water. - First Peter 3:18-20

The statement by First Peter expresses the belief that after his death but before his resurrection, Jesus went to announce to those in "prison" that they had been saved and were invited to heavenly life - to taste and see the goodness of the Lord.  Early Christians believed that the just who died before the coming of Christ awaited redemption in a shadowy existence which is referred in th Old Testament as Sheol.
Now you know where Jesus went after He died - He descended to the dead to free them in their shadowy existence - in other words - prison or hell.

"Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom"
The Holy Saturday evening Holy Mass in my parish is very long - almost two hours - for the readings start with the Creation...
You are the Way,
You are the Truth,
You are the Life,
My salvation.
You are the Way,
You are the Truth,
You are the Life,
The Gateway to my soul.

JESUS' PASSION WEEK

HOW AM I DOING IN MY LENTEN JOURNEY?
So far so good!

Wednesday, April 20:  It is sometimes referred to as "Spy Wednesday."  Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests on the day before the Last Supper and offered to hand Jesus if they would give him some money.  They paid him 30 pieces of silver.  He will forever be known as the betrayer of Jesus.  His name is mentioned 22 times in the Gospels, only Peter is mentioned more.

Thursday, April 21: I am not only a faithful observant but a willing participant again this year.  In the time of Jesus, the disciples approached him and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"  He said, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, "The teacher says, "My appointed time draws near; in your houseI shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples."  During the evening Mass of the Last Supper (7:30 p.m. at my church), I was one of the 12 in the "Washing of the Feet" by the priest just like what Jesus did to His apostles.  I must confess I had a feeling I had to volunteer again this year so I prepared myself by having a pedicure.  One of the hymns sung by the choir was "Table of Plenty."

Good Friday, April 22:  The Funeral Liturgy (7:30 p.m. at my church) is a time to reach down to the depths of one's faith and come to terms with belief in life after death.  Those grieving not only look back to what was, but ahead to what is: "I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full."  Again, I'm not only an observant but a participant sinner -- I kissed the cross!  There were many faithful present at the church that there were one wooden cross and two crucifixes made available.  I was wondering and thinking if the wooden cross was made of cedar while waiting for others to finish.  The cedar was chosen to be the wood used for the cross of Jesus,  Probably not?  One of the hymns sung by the choir was, "Where you there when they crucify him (Jesus)?  I did not hear my favorite "Jesus remember me...when I come into your kingdom."

Saturday, April 23:  The Vigil, often referred to as the "wake" is a time for grieving.  It is the first ritual event after death, and it deals with the rush of grief that death bring.  The Easter Vigil will be held at my church at 8:30 p.m. this evening.
Early Christians believed that the just who died before the coming of Christ awaited redemption in a shadowy existence, described and alluded to be a prison in First Peter.  The statement in the Apostles' Creed that says "he descended into hell" refers to this belief.  In recent theology of life after death, the translation was changed to read "He descended to the dead."
Easter Sunday, April 24:  A BLESSED EASTER TO ALL!

18 Hours of Jesus' Life

THREE DAYS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD BEGIN ON PASSION THURSDAY  If you have not attended the Mass of the Last Supper then you're missing out at the joy of gathering, the washing of the feet (I had my feet washed just like in the past) and the singing of the Gloria.

At St. Joan of Arc Parish Thursday evening Fr. Tom was joined by the Resident Priest Fr. Stephen and Guest Attending Priest Fr. Robert "Bob" Barron.  Fr. Bob is a theologian and an award-winning author of CATHOLICISM A Journey To The Heart Of The Faith.  His most excellent PBS documentary series of the same title explores the faith through stories, biographies and images.  He is the founder of the international media Ministry WORD ON FIRE.

18 HOURS OF JESUS' LIFE
The earliest and most frequently told story about Jesus was the story of the last 18 hours of his life...the "sorrowful" story of the way he died.

Again I attended last evening's (Maundy Thursday) Last Supper of the Lord and I had participated in a symbolic way the "washing of the feet" just like Jesus the lowly servant  did to the 12 Apostles.

I am the Bread of life
You who come to me shall not hunger;
And who believe in me shall not thirst.
No one can come to me unless the Father beckons.
And I will raise you up
And I will raise you up on the last day.
Jesus said that his goodness would be more powerful than any evil.  He never promised that he would prevent sin, tragedy, diseases and all evil.  What he did promise is he could come to any evil situation, small and great and pull goodness and life out of it.  He could even go to death on the cross - a most humiliating and aweful death.  It captured all that he was, what he came to do and all that he stood for.  The early church told the story of the way He died over and over again long before the Gospels ever were written.  It is a great story and all true because it has a happy ending.
What is this happy ending?

The announcement of the RESURRECTION.

 JESUS LOVES US
A BLESSED GOOD FRIDAY
