A New Beginning: Easter Season

A BLESSED EASTER!

__________________________________

IT'S THE BEGINNING OF EASTER SEASON which lasts seven weeks, ending on the beginning of Pentecost Sunday.  It's the church longest season - 50 days.  Christians believed that the Resurrection was just too big and too important to be celebrated for only one day, or even one week.  When Pentecost became a Christian feast celebrating the descent of the Spirit, Christians turned the time between Passover and Pentecost into the "Easter season."  Although the date of Easter varies, it can be no earlier than March 22, and no later than April 25.

Easter is a time of hope and reality.  In the Bible, even those who suffer are able to hope because their hope is based upon what God can do, not what they can do.  There was the reality of Good Friday because we accept the fact of suffering and failure.

I had my first and last egg hunt many years ago.  Today, Easter Monday, they had an "Egg Roll" at the White House.  President Rutherford B. Hayes officially approved the egg rolling game at the White House lawn in 1878.  The few and real pretty painted eggs that my friends gave me I did not eat but kept them in the freezer.  They've been there for almost 20 years!

For sure, Easter is not a time for penitential practices.  Fasting and kneeling were not permitted.  It's a time to see and taste the goodness of the Lord.

JOY!
