Heavy Cross to Carry

 GOOD FRIDAY

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did not know about this.  I must confess I don't regularly read news that comes out of the Vatican.  We still do the traditional Stations of the Cross at my church.
Two decades ago, Pope John Paul II introduced a series of Stations of the Cross that was slightly different.  The "new" stations which the pope prayed at the Roman Colosseum on Good Friday were:
I  Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
II  Jesus, betrayed by Judas, is arrested.
III  Jesus is condemned by the Sanhedrin.
IV  Jesus is denied by Peter.
V  Jesus is judged by Pilate
VI  Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns.
VII  Jesus bears the cross.
VIII  Jesus is helped by Simon the Cyrenian to carry the cross.
IX  Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
X  Jesus is crucified.
XI  Jesus promises his kingdom to Dismas the Good Thief.
XII  Jesus speaks to his mother and the disciple.
XIII  Jesus dies on the cross.
XIV  Jesus is placed in the tomb.
XV  Pope John Paul added a 15th station: Jesus rises from the dead.
In order to offer deeper reflection on Christ's passion, he eliminated stations that weren't scriptural such as Veronica and her veil, in favor of those based on the Gospel Passion narratives.
Rome diocese launches website http://www.karol-wojtyla.org  dedicated to John Paul II's beaitification:
April 30:  Prayer vigil at Rome's ancient Circus Maximus racetrack.
May 1,  Divine Mercy Sunday: Beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square
A miracle after Pope John Paul's beatification would be needed for his canonization, which is a church declaration that the person is a saint.  On January 14, Pope Benedict XVI approved a first miracle attributed to the late pope's intercession.  The approval came after 5 years of investigation of the Polish pontiff, who died in April 2005 after more than 26 years as pope.
