Black Nazarene of Quiapo

BLACK NAZARENE (POONG ITIM NA NAZARENO) OF QUIAPO CHURCH  came from Acapulco, Mexico via the Spanish galleon on May 31, 1606. The statue is made of wood, attired in embroidered maroon tunic with gold thread floral patterns and lace trimmings on collar and cuffs. On Jesus' head are Tres Potencias symbolizing the three powers of the Holy Trinity - God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.  The genuflecting posture of the statue shows the agony and the heavy weight of the cross.  The skin of the Nazarene used to be white but turned black when there was a fire in the ship.  There were two Black Nazarene statues brought to the Philippines  but the one enshrined in Quiapo was destroyed in the bombing of Manila in World War II.  It was replaced by the Recollect Priests with the other Nazarene statue that was presumed to be "lost."  Processions are held every New Year's Day, Good Friday and January 9th.  At the Quiapo Church, devotees kneel all the way from the door to the altar.  Most devotees walk and even travel barefoot throughout the whole procession praying for a solution to their problems and hoping for a miracle.  The 2013 procession was attended by 9 million Filipinos.

Poong Nazareno tulungan mo kami na malutas ang aming problema.  Eros me Dios de patri spiritu sancti.
