Subject: Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and companion martyrs

28 September 2010
Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila
and Companions, Martyrs

Dear friends,

As the Church commemorates today the martyrdom of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila and
his companion martyrs (from Spain, France, Italy, and Japan) in Nagasaki, in
the 17th century,
we in the Department of Foreign Affairs may indulge in a little deserved pride.

Our Embassy to the Holy See, a government agency, initiated in 1975 a move for
the recognition and beatification of the Filipino-Chinese mestizo
sacristan/escribiente from Binondo. It was our government agency that strove
to make Lorenzo known to the Philippine episcopacy and clergy, government, and
people--as well, of course, as to the relevant authorities of the Holy See.

It was a government agency that started a search for a portrait/image of a
countryman (who did not have photographs of himself), and commissioned the
distinguished Italian sculptor Gismondi to create the statue of Lorenzo that
now stands at the Luneta, beneath a narra tree planted by Pope John Paul II.in
1981.

It was a government agency that invited the Sovereign Pontiff to come to Manila
and to beatify Lorenzo Ruiz and his companions here. This was the very first
beatification ceremony outside of Rome.

It was a government agency that continued to work for the canonization of
Lorenzo and his companions in 1987.

Now, the Filipino--who was a salimpusa in the list of the Nagasaki martyrs--has
given his name
to the liturgical feast celebrated by the Universal Church.

The Department of Foreign Affairs could take a bow for its efforts--and
achievement in harmonious and fruitful Church-State cooperation.

May God--through the intercession of our Filipino proto-martyr, San Lorenzo Ruiz
de Manila, and his companions--continue to bless the Philippines and love our
people dearly.

Jose Lino B. Guerrero.
