Pope Benedict XVI Retires

February 28, 2013
Vatican City

The Cardinals saying "goodbye" or " ciao papa" or "auf wiedersehen" to Pope Benedict at Clementine Hall, Apostolic Palace

Most of the Cardinals present had the chance to bid the Pope farewell and give him cards or book
Papal signet ring will be destroyed by a silver hammer to prevent forgeries of any religious documents previously signed by the Pope

The Swiss Guards sign up for two years but since there's no pope to guard they all have to lose their job

A helicopter named Shepherd I waiting to fly the Pope to Castelgandolfo, the summer retreat of popes. All the church  bells of the Vatican tolled upon the Pope's departure.  The biggest bell in St. Peter's Basilica is named after St. Andrew, the brother of St. Peter

In Gratitude for Faithful Leadership

POPE BENEDICT XVI

Joseph Alois Ratzinger was born in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria, on April 16, 1927 - Holy Saturday - and baptized that same day - the first person baptized in the new Easter water.  It was a sign of blessing, he wrote in a memoir, that his life from the beginning was thus immersed in the Easter mystery.  He entered the minor seminary in 1939 at the age of twelve, but his studies were interrupted by World War II, when the seminary was closed and Joseph, along with most of his class, was drafted into the army at the age of sixteen.
After the war he resumed his education in philosophy and theology, and together with his brother, Georg, was ordained a priest in 1951.  During the course of a twenty-year career as a professor of dogma and theology at several German universities, he earned a reputation as a gifted lecturer and learned scholar, and was present as a peritus, or theological advisor, at all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council.
He was ordained an archbishop in May of 1977 and elevated to the College of Cardinals a month later.  He settled in Rome in 1981 and went on to become one of the most influential in the Roman curia.  Of the many offices he held, he is best known as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, an authoritative advisor on doctrinal issues during his predecessor's pontificate.  When he was elected the 265th successor of Peter in 2005 at the age of seventy-eight, he became the first German pope since Victor II in the eleventh century.  A central theme of his papacy has been the staunch defense of core Christian values against what he sees as moral decline across much of Europe.  At the same time, he has sought to improve relations with other religions, trying to determine if a "cultural synthesis" is possible without losing the identity of the faith while engage in discourse with the Lutheran World Federation, Judaism, Islam, the Anglican Communion, and Christian Orthodox Churches.  He has spoken out against human rights abuses and ongoing political conflicts and warfare, and has advocated better protection of the environment.  He has called for radical rethinking of the global economy, criticizing the growing divide between rich and poor, and has pressed for a "true world political authority" to oversee the economy and work for the common good.
Ever true to his episcopal motto, "Fellow Worker in the Truth," Pope Benedict XVI's teaching and prolific writings have always defended traditional Catholic doctrine and values.
On February 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced that on February 28, 2013, he would resign as supreme pontiff due to his advanced age and deteriorating health and that a conclave would be convened shortly thereafter to elect a new pope.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY! 2013

February 14, 2013
Love is patient,
Love is kind,
Love is not envious, or boastful
or arrogant or rude.
It does not insist on its own way,
It is not irritable or resentful,
It does not rejoice in wrong doing,
But rejoice in the truth.
It bears all things,
Believes in all things,
Hopes in all things,
Endures all things.
LOVE NEVER ENDS.

St. Paul  I Corinthian 13:4-8

Wednesday with Pope Benedict XVI

Wednesday September 30, 2009

After breakfast at our NH Jolly Midas Hotel, Via Aurelia 800 Roma, 00165 Italia, we headed off on an all-day tour of the Vatican.  The first on the list was a once in a lifetime experience - an invitation-only audience with Pope Benedict XVI ! Video: http://youtu.be/sMqDAr5sLaw I am blessed in seeing in person in my lifetime to see Pope John XXIII, Pope John Paul II (when he visited Chicago and held a Mass at Grant Park) and Pope Benedict XVI.  They should be respected because they are the true successor of the Founder of Catholic Church - Jesus Christ.  The infallibility of the Pope is beyond question because just like the apostles before him, he was very much guided by the Holy Spirit.  When the Catholic faithful say in response, 'And with your spirit' it meant there's a breath of life.  To those who are very much disrespectful of the Pope and previous popes (they know who they are - the liberal activists, the progressives, Catholic and Vatican-haters) who despise the Catholic dogmas and tradition I can only say since today, Ash Wednesday, February 13, 2013, the beginning of Lent and 40-day journey with our Lord Jesus Christ is 'to be kind to unkind people.'  God has a way of turning things around.  Why be a Catholic?  Because it is ancient and authentic.  The real thing.  For me, it is an attestation that  Catholicism is the one and true religion.  However, this is freedom: To all criticizers of the Vatican, that is the Catholic faith, about its past and present sins should be reminded of 'to err is human, to forgive divine.' The Holy Bible, the eternal word of God, teaches us not to be holier-than-thou. Because there is no perfection in this world.  That the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Living God and Mother of the Church, always grant our personal requests and wishes when we pray the Rosary.  It never fails just like love never fails.

I highly recommend this magnificent book by Father Robert Barron: A JOURNEY TO THE HEART OF FAITH. I am very much a traditionalist when it comes to my Catholic faith.  I hope and pray the next elected pope by the Vatican Conclave of Cardinals at the Sistine Chapel will be conservative and traditional and remain true to the changes in the Second Vatican Council.  This is the most touching of all when Pope Benedict XVI (aka Cardinal Ratzinger) was just elected:
In April of 2005 the newly elected pope Benedict XVI came onto the front loggia of St. Peter's Basilica to bless the crowds.  Gathered around him on the adjoining balconies there appeared all the cardinals who had just chosen him.  The news camera caught remarkably pensive expression on the face of Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.  When the cardinal returned home, reporters asked him what he was thinking about that moment.  Here is what he said: "I was gazing over toward the Circus Maximus, toward the Palatine Hill where the Roman Emperors once resided and reigned and looked down upon the persecution of Christians, and I thought, 'Where are their successors? Where is the successor of Caesar Augustus? Where is the successor of Marcus Aurelius? And finally, who cares? But if you want to see the successor of Peter, he is right next to me, smiling and waving at the crowds."

Our Lady of Health Vailankanni

OUR LADY OF GOOD HEALTH
VAILANKANNI, INDIA

Our Lady made two apparitions on separate occasion with her Child Jesus in Vailankanii asking for water from a poor boy for her baby.  The boy was bringing the pail of water for his master.  The baby drank all the water and the boy was dismayed.  He still brought the  empty container to his master and his master was very mad at him.  All of a sudden water poured out from the container.  She also told the boy to tell a priest to build a church in Vailankanni in her honor.  Even at a young age Jesus say, "I Thirst."  Many Indian Catholic pilgrims come to Vailankanni to pray to Our Lady for good health.  St. Thomas the Apostle came to as far away India to introduce Christianity and was martyred.

Take a virtual tour:

This reminds me of The Immaculate Conception Church in Lourdes, France.

El Vaticano

The glory that was Rome was and is for the sole glory of God.
Vatican City is not only a city but a country - the smallest country in the world.  I have to search if the height of St. Peter Basilica is 144 feet - the standard measurement according to the Book of Revelation to be almost closed to heaven in the Kingdom of God.
