Palm Sunday

The Basilica of St. John Lateran which is the Cathedral of Rome is the station church on Palm Sunday.  The baptistry that I did not get to see when I visited the St. John Lateran is a separate building from the main basilica.  Maybe I did?  It was so overwhelming. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkrtyrXz9bq  It served as a model for many ancient baptistries in Europe.  The building is perhaps the site of the bath house of Fausta, the second wife of Constantine the Great.  In 313, Pope Miltiades held a synod at this location which was followed by the first baptisms.  Constantine, who according to tradition was baptized by Pope Sylvester I, then built a circular baptistry.  It was replaced by the existing octagonal building during the papacy of Sixtus III (432-440).  In the center is a large round enclosure formerly used for baptisms by immersion.  In the middle now stands a large urn used for baptism.  Eight maroon-colored marble columns stand around the font enclosure.  The baptistry is surrounded by four chapels dedicated to St. John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, SS. Regina and Seconda, and St. Venantius.  Some of the mosaic and art work date back to fifth century.  Tomorrow. April 17, ushers in the final week for the Elect will be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Lenten Rose

The Lenten Rose is not truly a rose but a helleborus, a perennial flower that resembles a rose.  It is called the Lenten Rose because in some parts of the world it uniquely blooms during the spring and winter.  It has many beautiful colors of white, yellow, and purple.

Roses were banned in the early Church because at the time the flower was viewed as symbol of paganism, orgy, and lust.  Church writer and critic Tertullian wrote an entire volume denigrating the flower.  In about 202 A.D., noted theologian Clement of Alexandria forbade Christians to adorn themselves with roses.

7X7X7 Picture of Jesus

LOOK AT THE PICTURE CLOSELY

OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN
HALLOWED BE THY NAME
THY KINGDOM COME
THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH
AS IT IS IN HEAVEN
GIVE US THIS DAY
OUR DAILY BREAD
AND FORGIVE OUR TRESPASSES
AS WE FORGIVE THOSE
WHO TRESPASS AGAINST US
AND LEAD US NOT TO TEMPTATION
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL
FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM
AND THE POWER
AND THE GLORY
FOREVER AMEN.

Mother Teresa Novena: Started in 1952

NEW Stations of the Cross

  • I did not know about this.  I must confess I don't regularly read news that comes out of the Vatican.  We still do the traditional Stations of the Cross at my church.
Two decades ago, Pope John Paul II introduced a series of Stations of the Cross that was slightly different.  The "new" stations which the pope prayed at the Roman Colosseum on Good Friday were:
I  Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
II  Jesus, betrayed by Judas, is arrested.
III  Jesus is condemned by the Sanhedrin.
IV  Jesus is denied by Peter.
V  Jesus is judged by Pilate
VI  Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns.
VII  Jesus bears the cross.
VIII  Jesus is helped by Simon the Cyrenian to carry the cross.
IX  Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem.
X  Jesus is crucified.
XI  Jesus promises his kingdom to Dismas the Good Thief.
XII  Jesus speaks to his mother and the disciple.
XIII  Jesus dies on the cross.
XIV  Jesus is placed in the tomb.
XV  Pope John Paul added a 15th station: Jesus rises from the dead.

In order to offer deeper reflection on Christ's passion, he eliminated stations that weren't scriptural such as Veronica and her veil, in favor of those based on the Gospel Passion narratives.
Rome diocese launches website http://www.karol-wojtyla.org  dedicated to John Paul II's beaitification:
April 30:  Prayer vigil at Rome's ancient Circus Maximus racetrack.
May 1,  Divine Mercy Sunday: Beatification ceremony in St. Peter's Square
A miracle after Pope John Paul's beatification would be needed for his canonization, which is a church declaration that the person is a saint.  On January 14, Pope Benedict XVI approved a first miracle attributed to the late pope's intercession.  The approval came after 5 years of investigation of the Polish pontiff, who died in April 2005 after more than 26 years as pope.
